FORT HAMILTON, N.Y. A major winter storm struck the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, creating near-blizzard conditions along the coast, forcing many to stay home and telework. Despite the conditions. Walk the well-manicured grounds of Fort Hamilton, and catch panoramic views of Hamilton Harbour from the walls of this Victorian-era stone garrison. Built by the British in 1870, the fort never saw battle, and the massive, 18-ton artillery pieces were never fired in defence of the city. Today, the moat has been transformed into a lush garden, and visitors can explore from the upper battlements. COVID-19 Updates

The egg shaped fort was built in 1823 and features a moat, 9-11 foot thick walls of Bermuda stone, and a drawbridge. It is located on a hill at Ferry Reach Park, near Whale Bone Bay, a section of the Railway Trail and other coastal defence sites. Outside viewing only. 30 minute walk along Ferry Road, St. George's, from bus route 1, 3, 10 or 11. One of those forts was near Fairfield, and was called Fort Hamilton. The fort was built on the east bank of the Great Miami. When General St. Clair was defeated near Greenville in Darke county, his army retreated to Fort Hamilton with a loss of over 600 men.
